How much electricity does my space heater use?

frank_albers123 asked:

I have a 1500w space heater. Does that mean that it uses 1500 watts every hour?

It uses 1500 Joules of energy every second.

The power is a measure of energy use per time, specifically Joules per second.

Consider a 200 horse-power car, the engine produces 200 horse-power all the time, similarly the heater uses 1500 W all the time.

An alternative measure for the amount of energy usage is the Watt-hour, or more often the kilowatt-hour, this is the power multiplied the time. So if you used your heater for an hour, it would use 1500*1 = 1500 Watt-hours = 1.5 kWh.

This is the same as 1500*60*60 = 5400000 Joules = 5.4 MJ (Mega Joules).

it uses 1500 Watt hour for every hours of heating operation

generally there is a thermostat that stops the heating when it has reached the set-point
so while it is hot enough, = no heating = no consumption
