I hear alot about how you can die breathing carbon monoxide, so I was also wondering if electric space heaters release such a gas.

Carbon monoxide is a byproduct of combustion. Electric heaters do not pose this issue. Just make sure the electric heater is not on or near combustible items that may ignite. Also modern electric space heaters have safety devices to turn off the unit if it is knocked over or over heats. So make sure it is in good condition.
The safest space heaters I know of are the radiant heaters. We run ours at night all the time, and have saved a lot of money by using them!
See: for more info about these heaters.
Hope this helps.
Electric heater do not release carbon monoxide, they are safe if kept safe distance from anything combustible. It must be added that never run an electric heater on an extension cord. Extension cords or mostly for use with saws and items you are using while awake. extension cords heat up, they loose energy, and they cause fire. But space heater are very effective at lowering your energy bill. The whole house need not be kept warm as you would like it in your bedroom. Just as long as you think safety first.
