Marshall J asked:
I heard today in my school that operating a central heating system is more efficient to heat my room with a electric space heater that uses 1kW/hr. Also, they said that these heaters usually contain carcinogens. Can anyone point me to reliable sources on which are true? (Our central heating is zoned also, don’t know if that will help)

If you have zoned HVAC then it is most likely the cheapest way to heat your house because you can choose different temperatures for different rooms. If your just trying to heat one room then it may be better to use a space heater. Carsinogens? Well it will depend on the type of space heater. An electric space heater with exposed coils that can easily catch things on fire is really not the way to go. The new ceramic heaters are nice because they have a fan that can help circulate the heat, or an oil space heater is alright but they don’t have a fan so they take a little more time to heat a room. Both these types are safe.
