Is it safe to plug a 1500 watt space heater to a heavy duty extension cord?

Chantalle asked:

I would like my space heater in my living room but there’s just too much going on in there and I blow a fuse. My den would work fine, but I’d have to run an extension cord. Is it safe? Fire Hazard?

Yes, just make sure the cord is at least a 12 AWG cord.

look at the label on the extention cord will tell u the max watts thats safe on it

  3. Photinus says:

If the wall receptacle matches the plug on the spacer heater you are OK. If something does go wrong, the circuit breaker will likely cut off the electricity. Most space heater fires start because the heater is too close to a flammable material, not because of a faulty electrical connection.

Normally most houses would have a 15 amp circuit breaker for the rooms – which allows you to use appliances up to a safe capacity of 1450 watts – and a maximum load capacity of 1800 watts – so if you use a gauge 12 extension cord you could use it for your heater – as long as you do not have an thing else connected to that circuite breaker since your heater is 1500 watts which is the most you would be able to use safely

Just make sure the extension lead will handle the 1500 watts and if its on a drum of some sort run it out completely or it will overheat and melt on the drum
